The Body Shop - Carbon Neutral Retailer |
|
The Body Shop has committed to becoming a Carbon Neutral Retailer by the year 2010.
The planet is getting warmer and the weather as we know it is changing. This is leading to rising sea levels, widespread flooding, droughts, and the spread of tropical diseases. Scientists are describing climate change as the most serious threat facing our planet today. Global warming which leads to climate change, is caused by a build up in the blanket of gases that surround our planet. The main gas causing the problem is Carbon Dioxide. Virtually every human activity produces carbon dioxide, from driving our cars to heating or air conditioning our homes. This is because it is released when we burn fuels such as oil, gas and coal to make electricity, or to power our cars and planes.
So what is The Body Shop doing?
"It’s vital to reducethe amount of carbon dioxide we create. As the burning of fuels to make electricity is a key contributor to producing carbon dioxide, we’re committed to reducing the amount of electricity we use. So, we promote energy efficiency throughout all our buildings and incorporate it into new store design. The use of renewable sources of electricity, produces less carbon dioxide emissions than that produced for the burning of oil and coal, so we are also committed to converting to renewable sources of electricity where we can. In France for example, 96% of our stores run on renewable energy and in the UK the figure is 61%.
Because no one can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to zero, no matter how hard they try, The Body Shop has committed to counter balancing the amount of carbon dioxide we do create. This is known as becoming Carbon Neutral, which is our endeavor."
